When I started college back in 2008, I was living with two second years who already had their social circles, and were always out of the house. We didn’t have a tv and things got pretty boring pretttttty fast, so I started watching youtube videos on a daily basis. I kept discovering new videos and awesome youtubers. I got addicted! And then I discovered what a cover was (at that point I had never even knew it was a ‘thing’). I immediately fell in love with these artists and songs that were being recorded in such a different and unique way. I wanted in!
The next afternoon I phoned up mummie to ask if she would bring down our dusty old family guitar the next time shes comes up for a visit. Within two weeks, I had it in my hands, and for the first time, I taught myself guitar. I asked a dear friend of mine what easy song I should try to cover first, and he said “Upward Over the Mountain” by Iron and Wine: One of my favourite bands at the time. It’s a simple song, with only four chords throughout… So I thought, easy enough! I can do this!
I hopped onto youtube, found some tutorials on how to play the song, and that night changed my life.
By the next day, I could play those four chords (not very well!) and sing at the same time. Took a lot of effort and concentration, and my fingers were burning from the sting of the strings, but I managed. Every night I would come home from school, excitedly grab my guitar, and practice for 3 hours. 3 hours!!! Omg! If you play guitar, you should know that when you are a beginner, your calluses take time to build. It hurts. It hurt sooo much that I found myself taping my finger tips, just so that I could keep practicing, and get as good as a rockstar. Meow!
Within three weeks, and lots of practicing, I uploaded my first video. I was really nervous, but also thought nobody was going to watch it, so I had nothing to lose. I uploaded my video and went to bed.
19 views over night!!! 19 views?? What? Seriously? That’s crazy! Who is watching ME on youtube?!
And then my second addiction began; making youtube videos. 🙂
That is how I, Jessica Allossery (btw: pronouced Allaw-ssery), got started on youtube.
One of the most exciting times of my life!!!
