There are some songs that write themselves ā and My Little Boy is one of them.

A lot of people probably think this song is written about a son that I never had. And in all fairness, I did write the lyrics in a way that could make the listener believe it’s about a real human. To walt, my littlest goy…. The one who follows me everywhere, and captured my heart so hard and so fast. I love you, my son…. Especially since I’d released My Little Girl years ago, back in 2019! We were due for a song about a boy.
BUT – I also wanted to include all the dog parents out there. Especially since many up-and-coming-generations are choosing to have pets instead of children. And well — Greg and I are one of those couples who’ve decided on having doggy companions instead of raising children of our own.

When two become three…
So — let’s take it back to 2020 – the dreaded pandemic š.
Before Greg and I got married, we would spend hours chatting about pets and dogs and our future, and what that looked like. A little doggy was always in that picture. Continuing down that path, weād flip through photos and discuss the qualities and what type of dog we wanted. We even chose the name before we saw the little guy! āWALTER! Thatās the perfect dog name. So itās settled. Weāre getting a little terrier named Walter and heāll be our buddy foreverā I said to Greg.
After we got married, Greg got a job offer with Amazon and we moved to Seattle by end of 2020. We got our first home together ā our own little 2 bedroom bungalow rental on Greenlake. It was perfect.
Once we finally settled in, we very quickly started looking for breeders and came across one in Everett, WA – within 30 minute drive from us. We asked her if she had any Morkies available as that was the type of dog we were looking for, and she said the waitlist was 2 years — 2 years!! Crazy. We both thought thatās far too long to wait to bring a little bundle of joy into our lives that we were highly anticipating. THEN she sent us a message that she had several ‘Biewer Terriers’ that would be available within the month.
Whoa – ok we knew we wanted a dog, but 2 months seems too fast all the sudden. Lol! But we saw the pictures and did some research. I was hesitant because we had never heard of a Biewer Terrier before, but after finding out more, we discovered the ‘Biewer Terrier’ (pronounced Bee-vah Terrier) was a newer German breed, in the yorkie family. Very intelligent, very loving and super playful. That ticked all the boxes, and seeing the pictures of the litter, we fell in love immediately with an available pup originally named āPixleā.Ā

āTHAT is Walter right there. You can see it in his eyebrows!ā I said Lol.
Itās true, Walter has the best eyebrows…. But without a second thought, Greg put the deposit down and three weeks later we were dog parents, and our world changed forever.
Just a few weeks after we got him, I was lying in bed one night, unable to sleep, and heard the entire track in my head.
āMy little boy, Iām here to hold you, please donāt grow up to soon…ā
My heart ached and was swollen with love for this little guy who I still knew nothing about.Ā Cheesy but true! š Then the song came through me like a channel ā much like “I’ll Let You Goā didĀ — as if it was never mine to begin with. I was just a pathway, bringing this piece of art into existence.
Within 10 minutes I had written the song out on my phone, and went to sleep. The next morning, I grabbed my guitar and wrote chords to it, and it was complete! Quick and painless.
Song writing doesnāt always happen this way – in fact, itās RARE that itās so easy⦠but sometimes, if you just let it flow through you, itās one of the easiest, most gratifying ways to bring art into the world. With ease and detachmentĀ – I wish all songs were that easy. š

5 years in the making
I guess another thing to mention is that this song took me 5 years to release. It’s the FIRST song Iāve ever fully produced myself.
Can you believe it!?
I started learning music production back in 2020 and I tell you, thatās a whole new ballgame. Producing music is NO JOKE! Itās difficult, itās grueling⦠itās annoying! But itās also SO fun ā when you are able to fine tune your vision and get the sound youāre hopping for, itās pure magic. ⨠But it takes time. In my case, it took me 5 years to be fully comfortable enough to produce a song from start to finish and finally release it.
So, while I am very very proud of this one, I also gave myself a lot of grace and patience to get it exactly right ā exactly how I envisioned it to sound.Ā
And I am sooo thrilled with how it turned out.

Filming the Video šæ
To bring this song to life, I wanted to capture one of our favorite things to do together: Playing fetch in the sunshine in the middle of a meadow = Literal perfection! šøāļøš©µš¶š¾ We filmed it at the stunning Seven Oaks Lavender Farm in Catlett, VA with the help of the wonderful team at Feelings Wedding Films – Brazilian husband & wife duo. The idea was simple: a picnic in the lavender fields, capturing authentic moments with Walter.
But hereās the funny thing ā Walter was SO stressed out ! (Apparently, heās camera shy! š) He didnāt quite understand why we were sitting around while strangers pointed cameras at us. For a while, I was worried about how it would all turn out.
We had to post-pone our first filming date because of the weather. But actually it was the best decision because we ended up getting the most perfect sunset ā golden light spilling across the flowers in the meadow, very little bugs, just stillness, softness and light. Everything felt peaceful and magical, exactly how I’ imagined it’d hoped. In the end, Walter relaxed, settled into our picnic, and we just enjoyed being together. The real, unplanned moments made the video even more special.

Why This Song Matters š
My Little Boy is my love letter to Walter, and I hope it resonates with anyone whoās ever had a dog change their life for the better.
If youāve ever loved a dog, you know theyāre not just āpets.ā Theyāre family. Theyāre your safe place, your constant companion, your littlest loyalist friend. Thatās what this song is about ā not just my story with Walter, but every bond between a human and their furry best friend, (or their son, of course). So whether you have a little son of your own and he’s freshly starting a new school year, or if you have a new grandson just coming into the world, OR — like Walter — you have a beloved precious pet waiting for you at home, this song is for you.
And of course, to Walt, my littlest goy….
The one who follows me everywhere, and captured my heart so hard and so fast:
I love you, my son.
Stream the song everywhere or watch the music video now on YouTube. Even better would be to buy it on bandcampĀ ā where 100% of the proceeds support my work.
Thanks for being here,
Jessica
PS. Let me know what you think about the production on this one. Should I do anything differently? I always love a little (gentle) criticism to keep getting better. š Appreciate the feedback.
PPS. Exciting news! Youāll start to see new singles coming out every 4-6 weeks as apart of the new album āCanyon Moonā release. This is such an accomplished and polished piece of work and I am sooo proud of it. I am just beyond excited to start sharing all this new content that represents the new artist in me, in a more mature stage of life. Until the next one š
